The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced that a Tahlequah man pleaded guilty to one count of failure to register as a sex offender.

Nicholas Hammer, 46, was convicted of first-degree rape in January 2001 and was required to register as a sex offender. According to an indictment, Hammer failed to register and update his registration from Oct. 10, 2024 until Nov. 4, 2024, despite entering, leaving, or residing in Indian country.

Charges against Hammer arose after a probe by the United States Marshals Service and the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service.

Honorable Judge D. Edward Snow accepted the plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report. Hammer will remain in the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending sentencing.

Assistant United States Attorney Emily Wittlinger prosecuted the case.
